MEET THE CITRINE

For centuries, people have confused citrine with topaz because they have a similar colour and the same origin from the island of Topazios in the Red Sea. It wasn't until 1556 that the German metallurgist Georg Bauer, often called the father of modern mineralogy, published an article referring to yellow quartz as "Citrine". The name comes from the French word "lemon". Due to its rich yellow colour, you will also come across several alternative names for citrine, such as "Bohemian Topaz" or "Cairngorm", which is an ancient Celtic name.

Citrine is a transparent variety of quartz whose colour is caused by iron oxide. They often form crystals in the form of grapes or bunches. Natural citrine is rarer than amethyst, with which it belongs to the family of quartz-derived gemstones, so both of these stones can grow together in a single crystal. This creates a beautiful two-colour combination of citrine and amethyst, which is called Ametrine. Today, most citrines and amethysts are heat-treated to achieve the perfect penetrating colour.

TYPES OF CITRINE

The intense orange-yellow colour of citrine, reminiscent of autumn fallen leaves, is associated with spiritual enlightenment and inner peace in Eastern cultures. Buddhist and Hindu monks still wear robes of this colour as part of their spiritual practice. If you are also a seeker of inner balance, reward yourself with citrine jewellery. Delicate earrings, a handcrafted pendant or an original ring, where would citrine be best worn for you? You can choose from the two most common types - Yellow Citrine and Madeira.

YELLOW CITRINE

The colour ranges from slightly golden yellow to medium gold with hints of orange. Warm colouring is achieved by heating pale citrine or amethyst. The shade and intensity of the gem's colour can thus be corrected by temperature. Yellow citrine is mined in Bolivia, Brazil, Russia and France.

MADEIRA CITRINE

Full notes of amber, orange and honey caramel are hidden in citrine, which was named after the island of Madiera. It was from it that Portuguese ships exported great wine to the newly created colony in Brazil - where the richest citrine reserves are still found today! The Madeira Citrine colour is energetic, sophisticated and confident. Natural rich colours complemented by earthy shades bring the scent of warm summer nights. If you set a piece of jewellery with a Madeira citrine, you will create an original piece of jewellery with a gem reminiscent of a delicious Portuguese wine!

Madeira citrine is mined in Brazil and Madagascar. We also find a small deposit of citrine in Moravia in the vicinity of Bobrůvek.

AMETRINE

Purple and yellow in one stone? This is a really unique colour combination. Thanks to this, Ametrine is a popular gemstone among women who are looking for a unique piece of jewellery. No two ametrines look the same, because in each of them the colours blend in a unique way. Ametrine gemstones originate from Bolivia and first came to Europe in the 17th century. Legend has it that a Spanish conquistador fell in love with the local princess Anahí and married her. However, when he was about to return to his homeland with his wife, his wife died. Before her death, however, she still managed to give him an unusual two-coloured stone, which symbolised the division of her heart between her husband and her people.

Today, the Anahí mine is the world's only source of this precious gem.
