Tanzanite was accidentally discovered by herders from the Maasai tribe in East Africa, who noticed how beautifully large blue crystals sparkled in the ground. And so tanzanite, which is approximately 585 million years old, has become one of the most popular gemstones. The hills of northern Tanzania near Mount Kilimanjaro are to this day the world's only source of this gemstone.

In June 2020, news of the discovery of enormous tanzanites spread around the world. A local miner managed to mine two incredibly large tanzanites and became an overnight millionaire. Together, the tanzanites weighed more than 15 kg and were valued at $3.4 million. In an interview, he revealed that he plans to build a school, health centre, and business centre in the village with the money he earns, and donate the rest of the fortune to his thirty children. A month later, he managed to find another stone weighing 6.3 kg.
